OPEN AUDITIONS for Vanishing Elephant Players' upcoming production of Polish Joke by David Ives. We are looking for actors of all ages (18+), races, genders, body types, abilities, and skill levels to audition for this offbeat comedy about finding your own identity.

Director: Emma Pichan Assistant Director: Leon Kratz

A comedy about ethnic identity and the eternal American search for roots. Jasiu (thirtyish) is a Polish-American who has been taught not to value his own roots, so he decides to make his own roots, reinventing himself multiple times. Jasiu is also bedeviled by a reappearing Polish relative and has to face off with the ghost of a dead Polish patriot. In the end, by trying to get away from his ethnic background, Jasiu finds out who he is and what it means to be “a Pole."

CHARACTERS: JASIU (YA-SHOO) - A young man who decides to leave his Polish immigrant family and neighborhood behind in search of his true destiny. UNCLE ROMAN - Jasiu's Polish uncle who relishes their Polish traditions, even if he doesn't know why he does them. Doubles as Ladislaw, Sanitation Worker, Thaddeus Kosciuszko, and Doctor. O'FLANAGAN - An Irish man who runs an Irish travel agency, from whom Jasiu buys a one-way ticket to his "true destiny" as an Irishman. Doubles as Voytek, Cop, Leon, and Priest. MAGDA - Jasiu's childhood friend who enjoys dressing in Polish flag-colored nurses outfits and playing "Polish army hospital." Doubles as Zosia, Florist, Enid, Mrs. Flanagan, Nurse, and Olga. PORTIA - An high-powered, overbearing corporate woman who interviews Jasiu for a job, unaware that he is secretly Polish. Doubles as Helen, Rachel, Woman in Black, and Miss MacFlanagan.

Held in the Red Room of the Historic Masonic Temple (700 N. Madison, Bay City). Production dates are July 12th-14th. At this time, please note that due to stairs leading to the door as well as to the bathrooms, our building is not yet accessible to all.
